VRDP shows black screen on connection
Reported by: | Russ Lehman | Owned by: | |

Component: | RDP | Version: | VirtualBox 4.0.2 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Windows |
Description (last modified by )
Windows XP 64 bit SP2 host, Windows XP 32 bit SP3 guest.
When I connect to a headless session via the Windows remote desktop client and the Virtualbox VRDP server, the display will be solid black. If no user is logged in. a blinking white cursor will display. If I start typing, the input fields and buttons of the login dialog will display with everything else remaining black. If I log in, the display will come up normally.
If there is a user logged in, clicking the mouse will cause a small square of the display to show. In this case, disconnecting and reconnecting will usually result in the display coming up correctly.

I have found a usable workaround. If I set the local security policy on the guest to require a ctrl+alt+del to log in, using a ctrl+alt+end on the client brings up the login dialog (still with a black background but that isn't really a problem). If a user is already logged in, ctrl+alt+end will "wake up" the display, then I can just cancel out of the dialog.

I see this issue when I remote desktop to another computer running Vbox 4.0.2 with guest additions. Never had an issue with 2.0 or 3.0 until I went to release 4.0.0 and hoped it would be fixed in 4.0.2, If I set the system VM on the other computer to refresh the screen - the remote desktop becomes useable, but some of the windows on the remote desktop are bleeding thru to the window above it. Task Manager full screen and behind a windows will bleed the commit / change section thru but it is correct in the VBOX window on the other computer.
System is AMD Phenom II X2 550 with 8GB ram host is XP 64 sp 2 patches are current, video card is 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4550 guest with issues are XP 32 sp3 current patches, Fedora 14 and Suse 10.2 all have remote desktop issues. I can open port on my firewall and allow teamviewer access to show the problem if needed. The machines on that computer have no personal data and are my android development and linux test boxes.

Please attach VBox.log of the VM with at least one RDP connection attempt.
