I have the same problem, no way to uninstallit, I tried either via the Control Panel Uninstall or Repair Uninstall

comment:2 by Stratton, 15 years ago

I'm having the same problem. Also tried the 'Change' option and got a fatal error afterwards from Control Panel. I'm on Windows 7 build 7068.

I have upgraded from 2.1.4 to 2.2.0 (on Windows XP SP3 32bit) and suddenly upon login, I have to wait about a minute before anything happens (even CtrL+Alt+Del does not have any effect during this minute). I thought of a problem during upgrading, so I tried to uninstall VirtualBox 2.2.0 in order to do a clean install but it fails with a fatal error: "Erreur irrécupérable lors de l'installation" (something like "unrecoverable error during installation")

To all having the install/uninstall problem: please attach msi & setupapi logs for your failures here

This is a known issue see #3722 for details & workaround

For those unable to uninstall VBox 2.2:
To be able to uninstall you would need to copy the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DIFxApp\Components registry key (and its sub-keys) from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE branch.

Here are the steps for doing this:

  1. run the registry editor (press windows + R , type regedit and press OK)
  2. in the left pane browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DIFxApp\Components -> there should be some sub-keys having GUID names located under the "Components"
  3. export the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DIFxApp\Components to some file (right-click the "Components" key, select "Export", type a file name where you want to export the settings (e.g. C:\foo.reg) )
  4. open the exported .reg file (either with notepad or some other text editor or right-click it in explorer and select "Edit")
  5. substitute the HKEY_CURRENT_USER with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the file, save and close the ditor.
  6. import the .reg file (either double-click it in the explorer or in the registry editor use menu File->Import-> browse to a file, select it and press "Open")

Once this is done you should be able to uninstall.

Once uninstall is succeeded please send me a mail at Mikhail dot Sennikovsky at sun dot com. I'll then send you a link to a new test VBox version containing installation fixes.

I still got the same error message, but it seems irrelevant as Virtual Box is really uninstalled now. So the workaround did work-out. Just in case, I am sending you 2 files (in a 7-zip'ed archive) one before applying the workaround, and another one after doing it. The first one, the installation failed, but it succeeded with the second one. However in both cases an error message telling about a fatal error was displayed: "Erreur irrécupérable lors de l'installation" (something like "unrecoverable error during installation").

Replying to huygens_25: Are/were you able to install VirtualBox after the second uninstall (which displayed an err message but removed VBox)?
If needed I can post you a test VirtualBox version with install fixes as mentioned in comment 6

Replying to misha: I will send you a separate e-mail for the test version of VBox. For re-installing VBox, I have been unsuccessful yet, but I did not restart the computer after the uninstall. That's why I did not post about success or not of installing VBox. Probably tomorrow morning (CET), I will start my computer and try again to install VBox.

I could not reinstall VirtualBox even after reboot. You can find attached the log files of the installation. It fails just after installing the first driver (I get this Windows XP warning that there is an unsigned driver installation). No error message is shown, the installer just rolls back the process and shows at the end a general fatal error.

Replying to huygens_25: Based on the log you're trying to install VBox 2.2. We've done significant installation fixes since 2.2 including the error you're seeing.

Please send me a mail at Mikhail dot Sennikovsky at sun dot com. I'll then send you a link to a new test VBox version containing those installation fixes.

I have sent you yesterday evening (CET) an email to test the new VBox (maybe it reached your spam folder). If you did not receive it, just take my ID on this tracker and its yahoo.fr for the @.

Replying to huygens_25: Strange, I didn't get an email from you.
I've just posted you a link to the test version on email you specified above.
Let me know if you don't receive it.

Replying to misha: Mikhail, I have been able to install successfully VirtualBox with the version you provided me by e-mail. In addition, I think that bug #3722 is solved as I do not have any more slow down during login now.

I have upgraded from 2.1.4, network stopped working in my VMs after that. After searching I found bug 3655, so I downloaded the updated VBoxDD.dll , that solved the problem partially (one of my two VM started working correctly again with it). So I decided to uninstall 2.2.0 and install again 2.1.4. I can't uninstall it, while trying to do so either through appwiz.cpl or with the installer I get "A fatal error occurred during installation" (error 1603). I've also copied the components key as suggested earlier without any success. I need to get my VMs working again, help please.

Since I couldn't uninstall with the method described above I've restored XP to the date before installing VirtualBox 2.2.0. Since then the networking bug ( 3655 )is gone in all my Virtual Machines.
