Linux host freezes/hangs when windows XP guest shuts down

Description
Host is Mandriva 2006 with linux kernel 2.6.12 Guest is Windows XP SP3 with no other software installed.
When I shut down the guest, the host machine freezes at the moment the virtualbox window closes: the screen freezes and the machine stops responding to the mouse or keyboard and has to be rebooted.
