Skype for Business in Win10 guest unusable graphical glitches on Linux host with VBoxSVGA

Description

Hi, I'm running Win10 1903 on an openSUSE Tumbleweed host with VirtualBox 6.0.12 and integrated Intel graphics. I tried both the Xorg Intel driver as well as the X modesetting driver, and they both act the same. When I switch from VBoxVGA to VBoxSVGA due to the deprecation warning, Skype for Business (October 1, 2019, update KB4484102) becomes unusable due to major graphical glitches. Almost the whole window, including the window border and controls is either white or black. I am attaching a screenshot.

I tried updating the guest additions inside Win10, as well as the extension pack on the host, and it makes no difference. I have 2D and 3D acceleration enabled, which I definitely need for my workload in the Win10 guest.

Please do not deprecate VBoxVGA until VBoxSVGA becomes a reliable alternative.

Thanks.

Replying to sb56637:

Please do not deprecate VBoxVGA until VBoxSVGA becomes a reliable alternative.

  • VBoxVGA+3D is already gone in the 6.1.0b1 and all subsequent builds, and it's not coming back, that's a given.
  • VBoxVGA alone is not gone for the foreseeable future.
  • 6.1.0 is not out yet, no one knows when it will. Don't panic.
  • You don't have to upgrade to 6.1.0 when it comes out, right? You can still stick with the 6.0.x series, they're going to be supported for quite sometime.

I think that what you're seeing is similar to #18914, #18956 and #18966<1>. And as the comment #2 in ticket #18966 says (just a couple of days ago):

Please try the latest test build 6.0.x revision 133688 ( https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds ). It includes some fixes for the VBoxSVGA adapter.

So, yes, if you want to help keep on trying the test builds.

<1>: Someone with the proper authority should consolidate them and close a couple as duplicates by the way, unless I'm reading the symptoms the wrong way...

I'm now on VirtualBox 6.1.2, and this bug continues to exist.
