[VBoxSVGA with 3D] Graphics corruption in some programs

Reported by: cremor Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox 6.0.12

Guest type: Windows Host type: other

Description

When I configure my Windows 10 guest to use VBoxSVGA with 3D acceleration I get corrupted graphics in some programs. I'll attach a two files that show the problem:

  1. A screenshot of Microsoft Excel where the horizontal scroll bar isn't shown correctly.
  2. A gif animation that is a screen recording of my guest showing another gif animation in the Windows photo viewer. I'll also attach the original gif so you can compare the two. As you will see, the screen recording shows a completely broken animation. In some frames there is even a printer symbol visible that shouldn't be there.

Note: I think this is different from the existing tickets about white/black/transparent boxes in applications. I don't get those, so I usually can use the programs, only sometimes these graphics corruptions happen.

Configuration details:

  • VirtualBox 6.0.12
  • No extension pack installed
  • Guest Additions 6.0.12
  • Host OS: Windows 10 x64 1809
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 530 with driver 26.20.100.6912
  • 2 monitors with 1920x1080 resolution
  • All monitors (both host and VM) at 100% scaling
  • Guest OS: Windows 10 x64 1809
  • Guest is running in full screen mode
  • Guest settings:
    • 3 of 4 CPU cores
    • 10 of 16 GB RAM
    • VRAM at maximum (256 MB)
    • All other settings are at their default for a Windows 10 x64 VM

Test build VBoxGuestAdditions_6.0.13-133546 at first seemed to have fixed the broken gif animation in the Windows photo viewer, but after a reboot of the guest the problem is back.

The latest test build 6.0.x revision 133688 fixes the problem with the animation ( https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds ). The fix is on the host side, so you'll have to install the new VirtualBox version.

Please attach a new VBox.log if you still see corrupted graphics with Excel.

I've now tested VirtualBox-6.0.13-133688-Win with VBoxGuestAdditions_6.0.13-133713. The gif animation seems indeed fixed, thanks.

But I can still reproduce the problem in Excel. This time it happened like this:

  • Excel was running in a maximized window on the second screen. I was working in another program on the main screen.
  • I wanted to close Excel and move the mouse cursor to the "X" on the top right of the second screen.
  • Bevor I clicked, the whole top right section of Excel flashed as a completely black box for a split second.
  • After that, the whole ribbon bar of Excel flashed with some broken graphics for a split second.
  • Then, the horizontal scroll bar got corrupted again as can be seen on the new screenshot that I'll attach. This corruption didn't vanish until I closed Excel.

Additionally, I found a graphics problem in the desktop app of Microsoft Teams. In the attached screenshot you'll see the following problems:

  • At the top of the screenshot, there is a horizontal line. In the left half of the screenshot it is thin, on the right half thick. It should be thin all the way.
  • Same for the text "Mehr anzeigen" directly below it. (Note: This text corruption also flickered a little bit when I moved the mouse cursor above the Teams window.)
  • There are four "Antworten" texts visible on the screenshot. All should look the same, but one looks a little bit like bold text.
  • Note: The white boxes are not problems. I've added those to cover private data.

I'll attach a new log for a run that showed all of the problems I described in this comment.

I've now also seen problems in the application "Sourcetree". Sometimes parts of the window are covered in black boxes. I'm unsure if this is the same problem or would better fit in another ticket like #18914.

I've now also seen those black boxes in the WPF application that I'm developing and in Visual Studio 2019.

This is still not fixed in v6.0.14, at least for me.

@RonMil
You don't have to wake up every VBoxSVGA+3D ticket, you have your own #18933, no?

This ticket is a duplicate of #18914.

Please try the latest (6.0.x revision 134343+) build from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds

Both the host package and the guest additions must be updated.

The build fixes the blackboxes in the application Sourcetree and hopefully in other applications.

Issues with Excel and other MS office applications have been fixed in the latest test builds (6.0.x revision 134780+).
