Host-guest shared-folder stops working and guest hangs

Reported by: JohnnyG Owned by:
Component: shared folders Version: VirtualBox 6.0.4
Keywords: hangs during I/O Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

Often when trying to access a shared folder from Guest (Win 7 Ultimate N 32bit, fully updated), the explorer.exe stops responding, the folder I/O stops and Guest becomes unstable (other processes don't stop working, only those dependent on explorer). The only solution is hard reset and try again.

Sometimes I am able to transfer larger portions of data to Guest local drive, but usually I can't transffer more than 100 files (100s of MB) at a time until the freeze occurs.

I tried reinstalling Guest Additions, no effect.

I am using an R console on the Guest (cran.r-project.org) and an R-based data analysis program.

Windows reporting says:

Problem Event Name: AppHangB1
Application Name: explorer.exe
Application Version: 6.1.7601.23537
Application Timestamp: 57c44cc4
Hang Signature: 28df
Hang Type: 1
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.28

In Host (Win 10, up-to-date), the shared folder works fine.

at 12:24 I turned off the power of the system, it was frozen since approximately 5:38. At first, I managed to copy some files at ~3:10. Afterwards, I turned on the R-console and the Guest hung after a new attempt for file transfer.

Take a look at the "Known Issues" in the "Discuss the 6.0.0 release" post. There are several Shared Folders related tickets.

Yours is a duplicate of #18151.

BTW, it's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the VirtualBox forums, a lot more eyes there. More than 95% of the issues are resolved in the forums, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of. For example, someone from the developers has to deal with your ticket and close it as "Duplicate".

Plus a discussion and analysis on the bug tracker is going to help me, you, and potentially a future drive-by user or two. Not so in the forums, many more tend to benefit...

I have searched the tickets and found #15662 #15894 etc. one of which at the end had a suggestion from sunlover (according to the thread, a developer) that if I have a similar issue, I should open a new ticket. Some of the threads were closed as resolved (threads more than a year old, which no longer apply), some were open but silent for 4+ weeks (and unresolved for months).

If this is an issue being solved, I'll mark this as closed.

  1. These threads that you're linking to are quite old and resolved. What you're seeing is a 6.0.x issue, doesn't apply to these old threads.
  1. There was a duplicate ticket, the one that I linked to, #18151.
  1. *You* cannot close the ticket, only admins can... ;)
