Corrupt Video when changing screen properties in WinXP as Guest, Ubuntu Host after installing Guest Additions
Reported by: | mwichmann | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | other | Version: | VirtualBox 1.3.6 |
Keywords: | corrupt video resolution background color wallpaper screen properties | Cc: | |
Guest type: | other | Host type: | other |
Description
- Host
- Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft)
- Guest
- WindowsXP SP2
- VirtualBox versions
- 1.3.4 and 1.3.6 with GuestAdditions installed
Description: The video output of the WinXP guest becomes totally messed up. Problem remains after guest reboot.
How to reproduce: Right click on WinXP desktop and choose Settings, the try to change either the background color or the wallpaper. As soon as properties are applied the problem occurs and persists.
Observation: The guest is obviously running at 1024x768, while the WinXP screen resolution setting shows a contradictary reading of 640x480.
Workaround: Don't mess with the guest's screen properties. Booting in VGA mode (F8 while WinXP booting) lets you boot into your system then maybe a system restore might do it.

Yeah, I'm having this too. Host = Ubuntu Destop 6.10 (Edgy), Guest = WinXP Home SP2. Reproduce bug by setting video mode to 800x600 then shutting down VM. Upon restart, Windows VGA splash screen appears, but when desktop changes video resolution, screen becomes corrupt and either freezes or goes black. I wonder if the VM is incorrectly sizing the display window -- the window seems to size itself for 1024x768, then the 800x600 desktop appears in the center.

I am experiencing the same exact bug. I just installed 1.3.6, installed XP Home as a guest on Kubuntu 6.10, installed the guest add-ons, changed the resolution and there is no turning back without a snapshot or vga mode. I haven't tried restoring XP as I happened to be lucky enough to create a snapshot right before installing the guest add-ons.
I hope this gets fixed. VirtualBox looks promising and I think it's great so far despite the bug.
