Microphone audio input cannot record sound on Windows 7 host and WinXP guest

I can record sound in the Windows 7 Professional 64-bit host on a Dell Latitude E6410 laptop (using its built-in microphone), and I can play sounds in the Windows XP Professional SP3 guest.

But no audio comes through to the guest. I've tried all audio controllers (Sound Blaster 16, ICH AC97, Intel HD Audio).

Could you please attach logs for AC'97 and SB16. Perhaps HDA isn't related because VBox HDA codec isn't recognized by WinXP.

I have the same problem running VirtualBox 4.0.4 on a Windows 7 host, WinXP guest.

Same with Host XP and Guest XP too, nothing passes in recording but playing works fine.

That depends on how fast you or someone else will be able to deliver a patch. You should be aware that there are currently about ~3300 bug / feature request tickets open.

Hi,

We are the Genymotion team and VirtualBox is essential for us :-)

We have the same issue and for our final users, it's not possible to use micro with Android system because it doesn't work.

We installed VirtualBox on several platforms (Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.04 64bits).

On each platforms, we deployed two guests (Windows XP and Ubuntu 13.04).

On all Windows platforms, we were unable to detect the host microphone. We played with a lot of configuration (microphone input, line input) but the microphone never worked on the guest, and we never were able to record any sound on the guests. (no sound)

However, when we use VirtualBox on Ubuntu 13.04 host with the same Windows/Ubuntu guests, the microphone works fine and we can record sound on the guests

Summary : win (7/8) host = guest mic never works ubuntu host = guest mic always works

Results are the same, with VirtualBox 4.3.2, 4.3.6 and the latest 4.3.8.

Hi all,

I find the solution. I have Win 8.1 host and Winxp guest (I believe it does not really matter). I use VBox 4.3.18. I set Intel Audio.

The steps to finding the problem:
(1) goto your guest os's master volume, set the properties to show all the volume controls for playback.
(2) Shall see few items (line-in,..) are muted.
(3) "Unmute" and "turn up the volume" them all.
(4) Goto Control Panel, test your sound recording. It shall work now.
(5) Go back to the master volume, mute an "unmuted" item, go back to step 4 for testing; test the items one by one until you find the item(s) that you cannot mute.
