Hi,
We are the Genymotion team and VirtualBox is essential for us :-)
We have the same issue and for our final users, it's not possible to use micro with Android system because it doesn't work.
We installed VirtualBox on several platforms (Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.04 64bits).
On each platforms, we deployed two guests (Windows XP and Ubuntu 13.04).
On all Windows platforms, we were unable to detect the host microphone. We played with a lot of configuration (microphone input, line input) but the microphone never worked on the guest, and we never were able to record any sound on the guests. (no sound)
However, when we use VirtualBox on Ubuntu 13.04 host with the same Windows/Ubuntu guests, the microphone works fine and we can record sound on the guests
Summary : win (7/8) host = guest mic never works ubuntu host = guest mic always works
Results are the same, with VirtualBox 4.3.2, 4.3.6 and the latest 4.3.8.
We remain at your disposal if you need more information.
Regards, Jérôme GUILLOUX

I have Win 8.1 host and Win 8.1 guest. I use VBox 4.3.12. I set Intel HD Audio.
Initially I thought that microphone does not work on guest at all. But I after tests - it works. But very very very quiet.
Host microphone works fine. Audio playing work fine on host and guest. There are no settings on guest which make microphone quiet. Default simple installation of Win 8.1.
I have the same problem running VirtualBox 4.3.6 on a Windows 8 x64 (Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13), both
