#6236 reopened defect

USB device "cannot start" after installation

Reported by: Dragan Obrenovic Owned by:
Component: USB Version: VirtualBox 3.1.4
Keywords: Device cannot start Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description (last modified by aeichner)

Host:

  • Windows 7 Professional

Client:

  • Windows XP SP3 Professional

Synopsis:

USB smart card reader (ACS ACR80) gets recognized in client, but when the driver installation finishes, Windows XP reports the following error:

"The device cannot start. (Code 10)"

I tried rebooting both host and client, then disabling EHCI (USB 2.0) but it made no difference.

In general, USB devices handling in VirtualBox is very tricky and far for perfect. I believe this aspect of the functionality requires far more attention in the future releases.

I like how elegant USB handling is in VMware Player, but I still prefer VirtualBox for many other reasons.

I have the same symptoms with my Siemens Gigaset 2070 ISDN device. It is recognized alright by Virtualbox, I can attach it, the driver wizard fires up and installs the driver. But the device manager shows the device as not functional (exclamation mark) an the driver details have the message "The device cannot start. (Code 10)".

My host is Ubuntu 9.10 and the guest is Windows XP SP3.

What kind of log can I supply to help further ?

To help with any development efforts, I just got a Cables to Go Wireless USB Hub (Model 29570) and am receiving the same Winblows error Code 10. I am running Fedora Core 14 with a guest OS of Windows XP SP3.

My apologies: It'd be good to know that I am running VirtualBox version 4.0.0 r69151

This problem still occurs with VirtualBox 5.1.8 on a windows host with the extension pack. Using a wifi USB adapter assigned to a windows 7 vm (tested 32 bit and 64 bit) with drivers installed it gives a code 10 device cannot start error. Using the exact same hardware with VMWare player works fine with no such error.

I agree. This is (still) an issue and has wasted a lot of time. Had not needed USB before recently and have tried many things to correct. Found this thread.

Win7 Pro x64 VM Same USB error - Kington, Sandisk memory sticks - does not matter
USB Mass Storage Device driver reports "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
Driver is up to date at reported as Microsoft v6.1.7601.19144
Virtual Box version is Version 5.1.18 r114002 (Qt5.6.2)
Guest Additions is also up to date with VB

Seems there are too many issues for USB in general for VB
USB1 thru USB3 etc; "Stuck" on USB1 problems after initial VM Creation; help options are for older VB releases and there is no equiv XML tags to edit as proposed in those....
