VMware .vmdk image usable in VirtualBox but not back in VMware

Description
Used an existing VMware Workstation 6.5.3 Ubuntu 9.04 image (.vmdk) in VirtualBox. Installed guest additions. After shutting down VirtualBox instance, VMware could no longer boot it. Grub stage 1.5 would fail with an "Error 18".
