Description

hi all !

Mandrake Linux 9.2 guest works :) ! Or kind of works... :(

It's applications segfault very often. Especially "vi". KDE apps segfault sometimes. Kernel (2.4.22) didn't segfault.

Host: Windows XP, VirtualBox 1.4.0 on Athlon XP, 1GB of RAM. Guest: Mandrake Linux 9.2

Mandrake Linux 9.2 download site: (5.7.2007) http://ftp.ale.org/pub/mirrors/mandrake/official/iso/9.2/i586/

Please check it.

Overall, VirtualBox also have similar stability problems with some applications failing on Windows XP guest, such as DOSbox.

See: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/241

Related-Offtopic: Is there any *universal* way to make virtualizers stable ? VMware stability is significantly highter than VirtualBox's - that's a fact - but why ? What magic they did on their product ? Can we do the same ?

I thought hardware-virtualization (Vanderpool-capable CPU) is silverbullet, that makes things ultimately stable, but after testing KVM, I know that it's not true. It has it's own share of bugs.

Can I help somehow ?

If you really want to be helpful, then compile from SVN and tell us if it still happens.

Compiled from today's SVN v1.4.1, and the problem still here.

Alexey, Could you describe your VM settings more detailed. I cannot reproduce any segfaults in Mandrake Linux 9.2 guest.

comment:4 by Technologov, 17 years ago

I did: Installed VirtualBox 1.4.0 on host: openSUSE 10.2, 32-bit, Athlon XP, 1GB of RAM.

Guest: Mandrake Linux 9.2, 128 MB of RAM.

Start KDE, then Konsole, started "vim", started editing _any_ file, after several strings of editing in "INSERT" mode, "vim" will segfault, and Konsole will return to bash.

KDE applications also may segfault, but for "vim" it happens very quickly - about 10 seconds of quick key pressing with enters (for several lines).

The Mandrake 9.2 setup was a standard one, with KDE, and default applications.

Doing as simple command as "rpm -qa" to list all installed packages will also result in segfault.

Switching from KDE Konsole to real Console (ctrl+alt+F1) doesn't helps - segfaults as well.

Fixed. Verified. But speed is so sloooow. Possible VBox fallbacked to Qemu speed ?

Performance: After full boot up, with KDE, Opening KDE Konsole took 9 (!) seconds ! It takes 2 seconds just to focus on another KDE window !

Host: Windows XP, Athlon XP 1.6 GHz, VBox 1.5.0.
