There is never a need to install a driver when connecting these pedals. It is recognized automatically (both Win and Mac). Following is from the OsX system profiler:
VEC USB Footpedal:
Product ID: 0x00ff Vendor ID: 0x05f3 Version: 1.20 Speed: Up to 1.5 Mb/sec Manufacturer: VEC Location ID: 0x1a200000 Current Available (mA): 500 Current Required (mA): 100

Frank, If you want me to attempt anything please let let me know. I can easily drop-ship you a pedal if you would by chance be working on the issue. Let me know if there is anything I can do help facilitate a resolution. Thanks again. -Chris

Please reopen if still relevant with a recent VirtualBox release.
If a USB device is grayed out this usually means that the device is either not available (i.e. the host has grabbed the device) or the device is not accessible (permission problem). For Mac OS X hosts I would assume the first cause. Do you have any driver for this device installed on the host?
