Feature Request: Handling of virtual CD/DVD media
Reported by: | Marc Schoechlin | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | GUI | Version: | VirtualBox 2.2.0 |
Keywords: | cdrom, dvd, media manager | Cc: | |
Guest type: | other | Host type: | other |
Description (last modified by )
Many users just need the virtual CD/DVD media only one time (i.e. for installing the guest) - therefore adding/removing cd-media to the virtual media manager/ the guest instance creates some overhead work for the user. Just add a new option to the cdrom management property named "Ask if hard-disks are empty" (This option should be the dfault). The behavior of this function can be like that: If the vbox guest does not find a bootable media a popup window is opened which asks which media should be booted. In this popup you can select one of the cd/dvd media of the hostsystem to boot or open a file selector to select a iso-image. Iso images selected in this dialogue are not added to the virtual media manager.

I think this user really requests "quick insert" mode for ISOs, i.e. bypassing "Virtual Media Manager", and it's registering and unregistering of ISOs.
Am I correct, "scoopex" ?
And I really agree with this stance.
Add something like "Devices->Quick Mount CD ISO".
-or-
"Devices->Mount CD DVD ROM->From ISO". This should open "File Open" dialog with *.ISO filter selected.

You are right, it would be nice to inegrate this in the guest menubar.
"quick insert" sounds good ;-)
My implementation suggestion:
- implement a menu named "quick insert" in the guest window menu (Devices => Quick Mount CDROM/DVD-ROM => ...)
- add the same two submenu entries like in "Mount CDROM/DVD" (Host Drive.../, CD/DVD-Image)
- On selecting "CD/DVD-Image" just open a "File Open" Dialog and mount the image bypassing the virtual media manager.
For usability reasons, it would be nice to get a popup window with the same options which asks for media integration no bootable media was found while booting the virtual system.
