USB works, but Gamma Scout USB geiger counter is not seen by software — at Initial Version

Description
Host is Ubuntu 8.10, guest is Windows XP sp3.
With the latest version USB seems to work in a stable way, and all the problems with my iPod have been fixed. There's still one peripheral that doesn't work though. It's a "Gamma Scout USB" geiger counter. It is a geiger counter that runs 24/7, logging data; and then with a software and USB cable you can download the logs and graph them. It is actually a new version of an older model which had a serial port, so the USB chip inside is just a standard serial-to-USB converter. When I plug in the counter, Windows makes the usual "ping" and detects it. The driver installed without problems, and the counter appears in the hardware management page. But when I start the counter's software, it starts scanning USB ports and then says that there's no counter plugged into any USB ports. The software hasn't crashed, it still responds to commands, but it just doesn't "see" the counter. I tried plugging it in each of my USB ports, to no avail. Of course, the same counter/cable/software work perfectly under native Windows...
