VirtualBox 2.0.4 Crashes After Cut and Paste
Reported by: | David Kerr | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | clipboard | Version: | VirtualBox 2.0.4 |
Keywords: | cut and paste | Cc: | |
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description
This usually occurs when using Outlook inside VirtualBox running XP SP2.
Cutting text from outside VirtualBox (host Ubuntu 8.04) then pasting it into VirtualBox causes a quick and immediate crash of the VM. VirtualBox manager stays open.
Sometimes it won't crash if I cut and paste from gedit into notepad. So it may have something to do with the encoding.
Copying from the VM to the host is fine.

I get the same crash behaviour on an Ubuntu 8.10 host, Win XP SP2 guest, while copy/pasting from Ubuntu into an Outlook window.
This might be a related issue: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3417 It says "Fixed in SVN" which is not very helpful for people who rely on stable or maintenance releases.

Forgot to say: I am using "Sun xVM VirtualBox Graphical User Interface 2.0.4_OSE" which is the version "2.0.4-dfsg-0ubuntu1" of the "virtualbox-ose" package from the standard Ubuntu repositories.

I followed the instructions in the wiki page about Core dumps (enabled suid core dumps and set the unlimited ulimit before I start the vm).
I will make the core dump available when the next crash happens.

odoepner: the bug that we fixed does indeed sound like the one reported in this ticket. Would you be able to try out a more recent version of VirtualBox? You can download our builds from virtualbox.org. IIRC, the fix was backported to the 2.0 series, but obviously we can no longer fix 2.0.4, as it has already been released.

Please reopen if this bug persists with the latest release 2.2.2.
Could you please provide a release log after such a crash? And if possible a core dump? (See http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Core_dump).
