#21233 new defect

VirtualBox 7.0.x 3D acceleration produces artifacts with Windows guest

Reported by: sercallegar Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox-7.0.2
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

Using a Linux (manjaro) host with Intel Haswell graphics and X11 (not Wayland).

Just upgraded from 6.1 to 7.0 and tried to use a Windows 11 guest known to work well with 6.1.

  • Initially the Windows 11 guest was not even starting;
  • Disabling 3D acceleration made it start;
  • Updating the Guest Additions allowed to re-enable 3D acceleration without boot failures however, there are all sort of visual artifacts and prominently, characters become unreadable.

I suspect this may be triggered by my specific graphics card or graphics stack.

To a lesser extent, I still see artifacts on an Linux (kubuntu 22.04) host with Intel Gen10 graph (CometLake-U GT2 [UHD Graphics])

I can confirm this error on Ubuntu hosts (Haswell i7-4770S, Intel IGP) Jammy, Neon, Focal on Windows 10 guests with 3D-acceleration ON. Not only artifacts, video-rendering is not running. Without 3D-acceleration is everything ok. This error is since Virtualbox 7.0.0. In v.6.1.40 there is everything OK. Please help!!!

3D Acceleration has rendered (no pun) Win11 guest unusable in VB 7.0.2. Applications such as Excel display only a solid white window with no interface. Start menu is oddly transparent as if all window decorations are missing. Tooltips are also invisible with a white outline border, etc.

Arch Linux Host X11 / nVidia Gnome / Mutter

Attaching log it it helps

This issue is still occurring with virtualbox 7.0.4 + GA 7.0.4.

Using the VBoxSVGA graphics controller.

3D Acceleration continues to be unusable in the Windows 11 guest.

Experiencing exactly the same issues on Kubuntu 22.10 host running Windows10 guest when VBoxSVGA with 3D Accelleration is enabled. Host GPU: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 4600

This issue is still present with virtualbox 7.0.6 + GA 7.0.6.

Using the VBoxSVGA graphics controller.

  • Win11 guest, VB/GA 7.0.10 with 3D accel enabled.
  • Arch Linux host, X11, nVidia binary drivers 535.104.05, kernel 6.4.12.

I'm seeing major issues with colors of menus in MS Office 2021 LTSC, the 'ribbon' menu being nigh unusable. Black boxes also appear throughout the gui.

Another major problem is the Start Menu starts flickering wildly whenever text is searched for, making that fairly unusable as well.

Attaching a screencap of the flicker and screenie of the Office toolbar.

Perhaps these are both known issues currently, and I'll test again with 7.0.12.

Replying to tekstryder:

I originally thought that this was because my hardware isn't new. ;-) I personally have a 4th-generation core processor and graphics card. But we have here somebody with the 5th generation and somebody with the 7th and 10th generations. And some use dedicated modern GPUs like the nVidia 1st and 4th series. So in the last case, the hardware could be too new. ;-) But I think that this is a general issue with 3D acceleration implementation, and it isn't dependent on the actual CPU or GPU. Maybe I'm wrong. ;-)

Any news on Linux side with new build (7.0.11-159210)? On Windows side, nothing has changed. ;-(

Unfortunately, with Virtualbox 7.0.12 and GA 7.0.12, all of the issues I noted in comment:10 are still present.

Additionally I noted the Microsoft Weather app fails to render any of its screens.

I'm sure there are more issues if I dig deeper, but those are all showstoppers.

See my previous screenshot, screencap, and log:

Running the Win11 guest VM without 3D Accel is the only viable workaround currently.

Just as information: #21515 was reopened, so I hope this would be corrected (soon) ? ;-)

Happy New Year, everybody! ;-) This is still an issue on Windows for versions 7.0.13-160845, 7.0.13-161031, 7.0.97-160850, 7.0.97-161032. Is there any news on the Linux side?

Things looking slightly better as of 7.0.15-161716. Can you confirm this at your side? Or do you still have some troubles?
