#19664 assigned defect

Guest Additions prevent Lubuntu desktop from starting

Reported by: Organic_Marble Owned by: gombara
Component: guest additions Version: VirtualBox 6.1.10
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Linux

Description

The guest is a 32 bit Lubuntu 18.04 Linux machine. The host is a 64 bit Ubuntu 18.04 Linux machine.

The guest works great as long as I do not install Guest Additions. After installing Guest Additions, I get the login / greeter screen, but after logging in, the desktop does not start.

To test this, I created the virtual machine and restarted it many times, logging in successfully. After one of these logins, I took a snapshot and installed Guest Additions. After that and a restart, the desktop did not start.

To confirm that the snapshot was not the problem, I restored the snapshot and did not install Guest Additions. I was able to restart and have the desktop start.

I would be happy to provide additional information but I do not know what would be helpful.

I have the same problem, at least I suppose. After upgrading from 6.1.6 to 6.1.10, after the GDM login the screen remains black.

I also noticed that after that, if I login via ssh from the host machine and send telinit 3 and then telinit 5 the GDM login appears again and logging in results finally in a working desktop environment.

The guest is a fully updated Oracle Linux Server release 7.8.

P.S. I prefer changing runlevel twice than resizing the window, because doing that my desktop icons layout doesn't get messed.

I'm assuming that this is the same issue

Hardware Dell 5520 I7 12GBRAM 1TB

Host W10 V2004 19041.388

Guest Ubuntu 20.04 2CPU 4GRam 128Video 40GB Disk (everything else default)

virtualBox 6.1.12 r139181 (Qt5.6.2)

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-additions-iso

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-utils

I ran the above 3 lines, restarted as requested and am now locked out. You forgot the user/password, is the obvious response. No, if I put the wrong password in it says "Sorry, that didn't work. Please try again" If I put the right password, after going to a blank purple screen briefly, it just returns to the login screen To check, created a new VM and the first thing I did was perform the above. Same result

Which graphic adapter types do you use for the Linux guests? Is it the defailt one VMSVGA or perhaps VBoxSVGA?
