VBox on Windows 10 Pro: Dialog boxes too big for screen

Reported by: husbear Owned by:
Component: GUI Version: VirtualBox 6.1.10
Keywords: dialog window Cc:
Guest type: all Host type: Windows

Description

The dialog windows for VBox running on Windows 10 Pro (Lenovo T480 ThinkPad) overflow the screen and cannot be resized because the lower corners for resizing cannot be accessed.

Windows 10 Pro is set with defaults: Display resolution: 1920 x 1080 (recommended) Scale and layout: 150% (recommended)

Temporary solution to the problem is to change scale and layout to 125%; however, at that point the dialog box text becomes virtual unreadable.

Ideally, VBox should set a size limit on the dialog windows or allow resize from the upper corners as well as the lower.

Attachments are screen shots showing the original problem and the dialog window after adjusting windows screen setting.

I have the same resolution and scale as OP. I agree that some dialog boxes/windows are WAY LARGER than they need to be. The default and/or minimum window sizes need to be allowed to be made smaller.

Hello guys, the thing is, Qt 5.6.x HiDPI support behaves the way that it rounds system-scale factor up to integer value. So 150% system scale-factor makes Qt to scale application to 200% size (while 125% treated as 100%). We were able to scale guest-screen of virtual machine to float scale-factor but there is nothing we can do for widgets sizes/fonts. There is a planned migration to more recent Qt version in future releases, we will have a look if that issue can be resolved after that. Please also take into account that changing system scale-factor in Windows [7 .. 10] is somewhat fishy and often requires system to be rebooted after scale-factor change, especially in multi-screen setups.

I am also now seeing a very strange issue on Windows 10 (20H2 19042.985) with scaling, VBox is the only application exhibiting the problem.

The fonts size appears to be the inverse of whatever scale factor I set. So at 100% the font are huge, but at 200% they are tiny.

Update: This can be ignored - after a reboot the display is normal again.
