#17528 assigned defect

vbox always aborts KDE sesssion shutdown when machine is running

Reported by: mfoley Owned by: gombara
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 5.2.6
Keywords: logout canceled Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

This is the same as ticket 12195 which was marked closed without resolution. That ticket suggest reopening with a more recent version of VirtualBox if still relevant.

I'm using VirtualBox 5.2.6r120293 on a Linux Slackware64 14.2 host and Windows 7 guest. When I log out (KDE) I run a script shutting down the VM. Despite this, I get a message, "KDE Workspace / Logout canceled by '/opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox' and I have to re-logout to actually log out.

If I shutdown the VM manually, then logout, it works OK.

I have the same problem with a twist:

  • Even without a running VM, VirtualBox is canceling the KDE shutdown (and ends itself in the process). So if I try to shutdown a second time, it will work.
  • Shutting down the virtual box manager before shutting down the host system works smoothly.
  • shutting down with a running guest cancels the shutdown. (as described above).

How to reproduce this behavior? Simply

  • start a Linux session (host).
  • Open the VirtualBox Manager.
  • Try to logoff from the host or shutdown the host.
  • VirtualBox will cancel the logoff.

The Guest System does not matter. Its all about the Manager.

Please fix this, as this behavior is extremely annoying for users.

host: Kubuntu 18.04 vbox: 5.2.10_Ubuntu r121806

Indeed this is an ancient bug that annoys me for years.

The bug description is exactly as described by KFlash. The fact that if blocks shutdown if we have a running guest is OK for me, I consider this a feature that avoids losing data. What really bugs me is that it cancels logout with no gusts running at all.

I have seen it in KDE4 and KDE5, Centos/RHEL 7 and Fedora All versions (at least from Fedora 18 up to Fedora 29 and VirtualBox 4.x, 5.x and 6.x (can't remember about older versions).

I hope someday it get enough attention to be fixed.

Replying to Fochi:

I hope someday it get enough attention to be fixed.

Do you have an idea on how to give it "enough attention"?

This problem is still present today. :-(

I am able to reproduce this on Mate, Cinnamon, Plasma, LXDE, and Xfce with a self build VirtualBox from the development branch and with 6.0.15 installation. Having VirtualBox manager UI interrupts the logout process. The first attempt kills the Manager UI and VBoxSVC goes away. The second attempt (except on Cinnamon where it all goes up belly up) logs out successfully.

1) subscribing to the ticket (primarily), 2) reporting the issue as well, 3) adding a different perspective.

Do yourselves a favor:

  1. Open Firefox (which I believe you should all have), and in the "Preferences" » "General" » "Warn you when quitting the browser", enable that.
  2. Have two or more tabs open in Firefox.
  3. Tell your OS to shut down...

My Host at least (Mint19), gets stuck in the Firefox warning dialog, no matter what. It's not just VirtualBox... ;)

Not saying it's not an issue, just mentioning that I discovered that Firefox behavior when trying to replicate this.

FYI: The bug still exists in Kubuntu 20.04 with VirtualBox Version 6.1.26_Ubuntu r145957
