I too have this issue and it started when upgrading from 5.0.24 to version 5.1.0 and it is also present in the maintenance version 5.1.2. Version 5.0.24 worked fine. The problem is with any guest OS that boots to a GUI desktop environment causes the guest OS to crash and abort. I can still successfully boot the OS via headless mode but I am unable to start the guest OS in normal (also the show button after headless mode is started) or detached mode. I found out today that it is only a GUI based guest OS as I was able to create a new guest OS in normal mode as it was only a command line based OS. I then created another guest OS (PCBSD) and as it was booting from the installation CD ISO which as soon as the GUI part loaded it crashed and aborted the VM. This behavior happens with both Ubuntu Server LTS versions 14.04.4 and 16.04.1. Both servers have the LXDE desktop environments.
