Guest type: Windows Host type: Mac OS X

Description

I updated VirtualBox to the latest version (5.1.2) and installed the guest additions. Now when I run Windows 7 Pro I get this message

Some HDA audio streams (PCM Output) could not be opened. Guest applications generating audio output or depending on audio input may hang. Make sure your host audio device is working properly. Check the logfile for error messages of the audio subsystem.

Same for me - Win7 guest on OS X host as well as WinXP guest on OS X host.

Same issue for me. Audio on host itself is fine - only guest audio gone.

Host: Macbook Pro: Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015 OS: OS X : 10.11.6 Guest: Windows 10 Pro, fully patched as at today.

VirtualBox: VirtualBox 5.1.2.r108956 VirtualBox Guest Additions - 5.1.2

Host syslog entries:

VirtualBoxVM[1058]: 15:21:56.350 WARNING: 140: This application, or a library it
uses, is using the deprecated Carbon Component Manager for hosting Audio Units.
Support for this will be removed in a future release. Also, this makes the host
incompatible with version 3 audio units. Please transition to the API's
in AudioComponent.h.

Exactly same HostAudioNotResponding error received.

Best.

Same for me. Any workaround yet? Otherwise is there troubleshooting information needed to help resolve this?

I also tried all three options under sound:

  • Intel AH Audio
  • ICH AC97
  • SoundBlaster 16

No luck with any of them.

I get audio output but no input in 5.1.release or testbuilds, 5.0.testbuilds, but perfect operation in 5.0.releases. Linux mint17 host, win764 guest.

@matthewls

  • Your host is not OSX.
  • Your problem is not sound output.
  • You are in the wrong ticket most probably.

I downgraded my virtualbox from 5.1.2 to 5.0.26 from http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.0.26/ and my sound is back!

comment:9 by Socratis, 8 years ago

@hendrawd: Of course downgrading will "fix" it, since this is a bug in the 5.1 series. But what you did is called a workaround, not a real fix.

This should be fixed with 5.1.4. Please confirm/verify.

comment:11 by Brian Ruff, 8 years ago

I now have sound running with 5.1.4.

Dr. Frank, can you please do the honors?
