Intel HD and SoundBlaster 16 audio not working under linux guests and Windows 7 host

Because of another issue (https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/14919) I could not use the ICH AC97 audio controller. But every try to get one of the other audio controllers (Intel HDA or SoundBlaster 16) to work results in no sound at all. Intel HDA shows me a sound device within the guest, SoundBlaster no sound device.

I checked out all versions from 5.0.10 down to 4.3.34 and tested this with a VM with a Knoppix LiveDVD for repeatable results. Host system is Windows 7.

I will attach log files from each test with the latest version of virtualbox and also a screenshot where you can see the alsamixer and the lspci output.

HDA now should work out of the box using latest 5.2 with Knoppix.
