Windows 98 crashes during install

Reported by: Eddy Smith Owned by:

Description

The Windows 98 setup stops/crashes with an "SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown>0B2F:D8E2'iSUWIN will close." and there are screen artifacts. The setup and install process worked fined on VirtualBox 4.3.28. This problem appeared after upgrading to VirtualBox 5.0.2

Edit: I was able to confirm that similar happens with Windows Me as well. I get screen artifacts and an "SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown>OAFF:E1A0A$SUWIN will close." on Windows Me.

Just commenting to confirm this happens to me too, on VirtualBox 5.0.16, when installing Windows ME.

Same exact issue, SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown>0B2F:D8E2 SUWIN will now close

The artifacting is also there (notably the setup logo is all black)

Also, I tried to run virtual machines that contained Windows 98 and Me from VirtualBox 4.3. These virtual machines do run but I noticed the performance is slow the first time programs/dialogs are run/displayed at times. I don't remember seeing this behavior in VirtualBox 4.3. Is this a separate problem or not? Is it possible that this is some sort of a hard drive caching issue? I don't know.

I get a similar error with the setup program for the original release of Windows 95 as well. The error is "SUWIN caused a Not Present Fault in module <unknown>0A77:A915alSUWIN will close." There are similar screen artifacts. I tried the setup program for the OEM second release of Windows 95 with USB support. There is no error and it just crashes with screen artifacts.
