Using USB scanner in Win7 x64 guest causes VM crash, throws segfault in host Ubuntu 12.04 x64 log

Reported by: mt Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.3.16
Keywords: USB, crash, segfault Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

Since updating to latest from repository, I am unable to use the USB scanner in my guest. When the scanner is accessed the windows come up to begin work, sit there, then the VM crashes(closes), and a segfault is thrown in the host log kernel: [302505.840159] EhciFramer[19150]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f837de35b0a sp 00007f837c17da50 error 6 in VBoxDD.so[7f837dd25000+253000]

I have tried removing devive from VM settings with the VM down, brought VM up and re-added device, same result

Love vbox and all those associated with it. Please do not hold my opinion of your employer against me

Could be the same issue as https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=63589 - just for cross-referencing purposes, not that there is any real hint in this post.

Sounds like a similar situation. I am not aware of any logs for the scanner itself I could check, on the guest. I just looked in syslog and saw the segfault on the host

It would be great if you could provide a core dump from the crash. See this for more information. Please compress it and send it to alexander (dot) eichner (at) oracle (dot) com. In case the core dump is still too big to send by mail contact me and I will provide you with further information how to send the core dump.

Is there an FTP server I can upload to?

comment:6 by Frank Mehnert, 10 years ago

Unfortunately there is no anonymous FTP server.

Not sure how mentioning that there used to be a mechanism to help employees receive core dumps, but that Oracle removed it without finding a replacement is "off-topic". Seems VERY relevant to this situation. If the comment was removed because Oracle does not like being shown it's own shortcomings and screw-ups, that is understandable.

So without email and with FTP no longer existing, are there any method to deliver core dump, that does not involve hosting the file at my expense? I want to be as helpful as possible, but should not be responsible for hosting a file that Oracle needs it's employees to have access to. Oracle should provide such a place.

Sorry, if you cannot provide a core dump either by email or by uploading it to a server of your choice (there is no need to post this URL here), we can't help you.

I have also renamed your nick name as you didn't respond to my email last week.

Resolution: duplicate
Status: newclosed

No need to invest further time here, got a core dump from another user with the same issue, see #13400. Closing this one as a duplicate.
