Fullscreen menu problems

Reported by: AL|EN Owned by:
Component: GUI Version: VirtualBox 4.3.2
Keywords: taskbar Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

Hi,

The VB fullscreen menu has been moved from the top to the bottom of the screen. This change has a tragic impact on the taskbar.

Due to a large area of menu activation , trying to click "tab" application in the middle of the taskbar position, is very uncomfortable as these menu pops up almost immediately and covers it.

And it's even worse when somebody using two rows taskbar. Please fix this ASAP as it affect usual Windows desktop experience.

I can't quite follow. Aren't you aware of the VM setting 'General / Advanced / Mini Toolbar / Show at Top of Screen'?

Now I'm aware but even now my report shows a problem with application design and testing: you should not change position in the first place and this option should be called "Show at Bottom of Screen". Remember about this next time when you want to change another thing.

And the next time you open a bug report you should remember to check the facts before complaining.

The mini toolbar in fullscreen mode was introduced with VBox 3.0.0. The initial position of the mini toolbar was the bottom of the screen. The VM setting 'Show at top of Screen' was introduced in VBox 3.0.4 (see the change log of VBox 3.0.x here). So actually we did not change the position of the menu bar at all. The only change we did is to allow the menubar to be placed at the top of the screen -- most likely to improve the look and feel on Windows hosts and to satisfy users like you.

I'm sorry but my assumption that you change position of the menu bar was because I've always used VM's that have this option enabled. Yet the second problem still exist: the size of the area of menu activation was significantly increased since 4.2 and it's just too big. Previously there wasn't anything wrong with menu bar at the bottom but now every windows guest is forced to change it's position to top. Can this be reverted?

Actually there is an bug in minitoolbar autohide/show mechanism.
Prior to VBox 4.3 version minitoolbar was autoshown only when mouse cursor reached the screen edge, so underlying VM controls were accessible. After upgrade to 4.3 (and still in 4.3.2) minitoolbar is autoshown when mouse cursor just reaches the original minitoolbar place. So visual controls under minitool are completely unusable in fullscreen and seamless mode.

It is specific to windows hosts (I have windows 8 laptop). On linux host it works just as expected.

New minitoolbar behaviour, popping when mouse cursor reaches full minitoolbar space, is very intrusive. It looks nice, but the old style still present in linux is more productive.

Also it looks horrible under some scenarios (#12306), so I think a user option to select the minitoobar style would be nice.

+1, the activation area of the toolbar is too big.

Is there a chance that this very old bug will be fixed?

This is fixed in v4.3.16, tested with Win7 host and Win7, Win8, Ubuntu clients.

Thank you :)
