USB3 external hard drive not recognized in windows 7 64bit virtual OS

Description
After adding a WD my passport USB filter the operating system is able to see the device but is unable to get the proper driver for it; the device comes up as unknown. This is very inconvenient as it currently requires me to move files to a host shared folder first before moving them onto my external from the host OS.
Any help/fix would be greatly appreciated.
