Does this also happen with 3D disabled?

comment:2 by Panos Kavalagios, 12 years ago

I have re-installed the Guest Additions without 3D support. I didn't know how to disabled them differently. I have tried a test webex session, with sharing desktop as well and no problem observed. We can say that it is not reproduced with 3D disabled. This is a workaround and not a solution right?

With 3D enabled it is also reproduced on Fedora 18 that is my system nowadays.

Disabling 3D can be done simply by turning off the appropriate VM setting. No need to install the Guest Additions without 3D support.

OK thank you. I didn't know that it was enough to perform that change only from the VM settings. Let me know if you also need to test that case as well.

Everything should also work with 3D enabled but never activate 3D for a guest unless you really need it. With 3D enabled, more environment is used, including the host 3D graphics drivers which often have bugs. But I don't want to speculate here if the bug is in your host driver or in VBox. At least I cannot reproduce the crash here but I probably have different hardware + corresponding host drivers.

The issue is reproduced in 4.2.8 as well. I have a core file of 190MB ready. Please, let me know how it should be delivered. Should we use ftp.oracle.com?

Edit: We may update the ticket versions to 4.2.8 and Fedora 18 OS.

The core file pinpoints the following:

Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib64/libthread_db.so.1".
Core was generated by `/usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox --comment MS Windows XP --startvm 576595a1-31da-'.
Program terminated with signal 4, Illegal instruction.

Yes, please upload the core dump to ftp.oracle.com:/appsdev/incoming and tell me via private email to frank _dot_ mehnert _at_ oracle _dot_ com the file name. Please also upload the corresponding VBox.log file (or attach it to this ticket).
