I assume that the USB SC readers are USB 1.1 (or at most 2.0) devices. 
Correct?

Are you plugging any of them by chance into a "USB3 port" (in quotes, as 
this term is ambiguous, I mean a USB port connected to a USB3/xHCI 
controller)?

All USB ports are alike? Or is there a pattern?

4.3 doesn't have significantly different code for handling USB compared 
to 4.2, so the version shouldn't matter much.
