I received a friendly tip saying that
if a fedora installation contains rpms that did not come from the
vanilla fedora repository, then the upgrade will indeed hang in
"Checking dependencies in packages selected for installation"

So, I checked this disk that would hang - and indeed it does
have packages installed from other repositories such as
atrpms and frshrpms, ..etc.
The disk without such third party rpms upgrades without a hitch.
To solve the hang problem, the fedora community released a respin
of Fedora 8, called
Fedora-Unity-20080204-8-i386-DVD.iso
and
Fedora-Unity-20080204-8-x86_64-DVD.iso
and the torrent is only available at
