#278 closed defect (fixed)

VirtualBox is rather slow if other programms do computations

Reported by: dodger48 Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 1.3.8
Keywords: slow booting Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: other

Description

Hi,

VirtualBox can run guest systems very fast if it has the CPU of the host system for itself. But if other programms that consume much CPU cyles (like mencoder) it breaks down. E.g. booting of Debian in VirtualBox that takes normally 30 seconds lasts approx. 45 minutes.

It doesn't help even if I give the processes of the CPU cycles consuming programms a priority of 19 (with renice) and VirtualBox a priority of -19.

My configuration: VirtualBox 1.3.8 OSE and 1.3.99 from SVN. The same result with both versions. Kernel: Linux 2.6.20.3 Host OS: Debian Etch Guest OS: Debian Sarge CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.50GHz Ram: 1,25 Gb

Would be nice if you could fix it or give me a hint what I made wrong.

Can you attach the log file? (~/.VirtualBox/Machines/vm_name/Logs/VBox.log)

I don't know if the attached log file helps. The timestamp is older than the time I run VirtualBox. But it's the log file with the latest timestamp.

Thanks. It was just to get more info about your CPU. We'll look into it.

Try again with 1.4.0 please.

Speed is much better with 1.4.0. Thank you!

But now the OS freeses inside of VirtualBox. I will create a new ticket for this purpose.
