Virtual box doesnt recogonize .vdi files

Description
Hi there,
I am a student at brainstation and we are using the virtual box and they have an image from kali-linux. I have installed virtual box but when I try to import the vdi file it only gives me .XML or vbox extension. Will not show the vdi file. Furthermore if I run the .vbox file it will start and immediately shutdown and say aborted.
Please help.
