#9858 closed defect (fixed)

Problem auto-ejecting CD/DVD

Reported by: Silverwolf Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.1.6
Keywords: boot order Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description (last modified by Frank Mehnert)

I finished installed Ubuntu Server, when it auto-eject CD/DVD, it unselects the ISO image from the devices menu, although when the VM restarts it starts again the installer from the ISO. This happens with any ISO and installing any operating system. The VM must be closed and started again for the normal boot operation. I was using the SATA controller for both the CD/DVD and the HDD. I haven't experienced this bug with an IDE controller for the CD/DVD. I'm running Win 7 x64 Ultimate as host.

One SATA controller for both. (Host I/O enabled) CD/DVD - port 0 HDD - port 1 Port count: 2

I still have the same problem on v4.1.8. I thought maybe the "crash when ejecting twice" bug that was fixed was related... guess not.

To reiterate: after a Linux install completes and it goes to reboot, it auto-ejects the ISO (it appears that nothing is in the virtual drive anymore when I go to do so) and ask you to hit ENTER to reboot. Upon reboot the VM boots to the "unmounted" ISO again (and it still appears that the virtual drive is empty).

Workaround: Mount any ISO (even the same one), unmount it, reboot -- it boots to first HDD.

  • Host: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
  • VirtualBox: 4.1.6, 4.1.8
    • 1 SATA controller (AHCI, not using host I/O cache) with
      • 1 CD/DVD
      • 1 VDI (dynamically allocated)

Guests: Mint 11, Mint 12, ExTiX 9, Ubuntu 11, etc.

Just verified expected behavior by leaving the virtual CD/DVD drive on an IDE controller.

Also just saw that 4.1.16 is out today.

Actually a duplicate of #12885 which describes the problem a bit better. The problem was that the guest-initiated medium change (ejecting the medium) was not saved permanently.
