This issue is caused by ATI drivers bug.
To make a proper work-around, I need to ensure your behavior is similar to what I'm seeing here:
Does the issue goes away when VM window becomes inactive? E.g. while having VM window active & displayed, press <ctrl>+<alt>+<del> (which should be propagated to host, and not propagated to guest), and select "Start Task Manager" in a host popup window.
This should start task manager, make its window active, and VM window inactive.
Is it correct that the issue goes away until VM window becomes active again?

comment:2 by misha, 13 years ago

The following test build should solve the problem:
http://www.virtualbox.org/download/testcase/VirtualBox-2011-11-25-09-48-55-win-4.1-rel-4.1.7-r75040-MultiArch.exe
There is no need to update guest additions, i.e. only host VBox installations needs to be updated.
Please give it a try and let me know how it goes.

I'm still seeing this on a fresh VirtualBox 4.1.14 install. I have a Windows 7 64-bit host and a clean Ubuntu 12.04 guest install with only DKMS and the 4.1.14 guest additions installed. Disabling 3d acceleration lets me see and use the mini-bar.

Attaching log file.

Problem is not limited to ATI. I have nvidia. I see issue using ubuntu 12.04 and gnome-shell (3d accel. required) as well as with linuxMint 13 (maya, RC) using cinnamon DE (based upon gnome-shell). Mini-toolbar is visible during transition into fullscreen but is repressed thereafter. Changing from bottom location to top has no effect on visibility.

Not fixed as of 4.1.16.

comment:9 by mizzao, 12 years ago

Still not fixed as of 4.1.20. I am running an Ubuntu Unity 12.04 guest on a Windows 7 x64 host.

Hoping the 3D fixes for 4.2 fix something. My screen rendering gets really broken when moving the guest between multiple monitors, and host key appears to not respond (but in reality it just is doing stuff but nothing is showing on the screen.)

To all having a mini-toolbar+full-screen issue on Windows hosts with non-ATI graphics: please give a try to this test build which extends the ATI-specific fix to non-ATI as well and let me know if it helps:

http://www.virtualbox.org/download/testcase/VirtualBox-4.2.0_RC3-80634-Win.exe

If anyone is still having this issue with Windows+ATI please speak up as well.

I am seeing this issue when trying to enable 3D Acceleration for 32-bit Ubuntu Unity 12.04 guest on a Windows 7 x64 host. I am running VirtualBox 4.1.22. Windows says I have a Nvidia NVS 3100M display adapter.

I'm running two separate boxes with almost identical config and I'm only seeing the behavior consistently on one of them.

Here's my setup where I'm having trouble:
VirtualBox 4.2.0 RC4 (with extension pack and latest guest additions installed)
Windows 7 x64 Host (all the latest updates installed)
Ubuntu 12.04 x64 Guest (all the latest installed with apt-get upgrade and dist-upgrade)
*ATI Radeon HD 5450*

Here's my setup where I'm NOT having any trouble:
VirtualBox 4.2.0 RC4 (with extension pack and latest guest additions installed)
Windows 7 x64 Host (all the latest updates installed)
Ubuntu 12.04 x64 Guest (all the latest installed with apt-get upgrade and dist-upgrade)
*ATI Radeon HD 4670*

One more thing I need to do is verify the host driver version of the ATI drivers. I believe my Radeon HD 4670 is using the native/built-in Windows-supplied driver where the newer Radeon HD 5450 where I'm having trouble is using the driver directly from the manufacturer website.

I just added the attachments. The 'not working' one shows the host machine where I'm still experiencing the behavior. I should mention that I upgrade to VirtualBox 4.2 Release and then grabbed the log. The behavior is still there in this latest release.

The other file, working.txt, shows my other machine which is almost identical in hardware and where I'm not experiencing any problems.

I use the VM for my work, so was reluctant to mess around with a non-release version of VirtualBox while I could just work around the issue. However, I just updated to the VirtualBox 4.2.0 release this morning, and once I had Guest Additions updated, this issue was fixed for me.

I was seeing the exact same issue on VirtualBox 4.1.20 running Ubuntu64 12.04 LTS running Unity.

Then it got worse after upgrading to VirtualBox 4.2.4 r81684. Before the VB upgrade it would never show the Mini Toolbar in Fullscreen nor Seemless even when I pressed Host+Home, but I could Ctrl+Alt+Del > Task Manager and get back out to the Host OS and it'd stay in the background and/or come back when I told it to.

After the VB upgrade, now Host+Home seems to remove my ability to control the Unity shell, though it still shows (the Mini toolbar is still invisible) but any windows I have up still capture mouse and keyboard input. When I click on the shell, it actually goes through it to the Host OS windows.

For instance, I can have a browser open in the Host OS, then go fullscreen/seemless in VB and open the App Center for Ubuntu. I can use Ubuntu fine. When I hit Host+Home nothing visual happens. However, at this point I can still click and drag Ubuntu windows around, but I can't interact with the Unity shell itself. Then I'll realize my cursor is changing and I can randomly click on things like they are links. Once I finally get back to my Host OS, I realize I've been clicking on things in the browser as if the Unity shell wasn't there.

When I try to switch back to Ubuntu I sometimes get an error, it sometimes works, and sometimes only brings up the app windows and not Unity. And sometimes I can see parts of Ubuntu visible while I'm inside my Host OS.

This only happens inside Unity. Everything works like it should at the Ubuntu login screen.

Host Info

  • OS: Win7 x64 Home Premium SP1
  • Vid: AMD Radeon HD 6950 (2GB)
  • Vid Driver Packaging Version: 9.002-120928m-148276C-ATI
  • Mem: 16384 MB

Guest Info

  • OS: Ubuntu (64 bit) 12.04 LTS running Unity
  • Display: 56 MB, 3D Accel On
  • Mem: 6144 MB

comment:19 by TB, 12 years ago

I'm seeing the exact same behavior as jokeyxero. The only way for me to get to the mini toolbar is to hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then hit Escape. Even if I 'pin' the toolbar, it's still invisible when the VM has focus.

Host Info:

  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
  • AMD 965 CPU, 8GB RAM
  • Nvidia GT440 graphics card, dual monitors

Guest Info:

  • Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit
  • Display is set to 128MB with 3D acceleration, single monitor
  • 768 MB memory

I'm running VirtualBox 4.2.4.r81684 with the latest Guest Additions.

If I turn off 3D acceleration, then the problem goes away entirely.

Experiencing inability to get to hostkey menus with Host=Win8x64, Guest=Ubuntu12.04x6 after enabling VBox 3d accelleration and in Unity. It worked OK at the Ubuntu/guest login screen, but the host key appears to stop working after logging into Ubunutu to the Desktop.

Same issue still with VB 4.2.10, Windows 7 64 bit host and Ubuntu 12.04/12.10 guest with 3D acceleration in full screen. The mini toolbar is present at the Ubuntu login screen, but after logging in, it disappears.

I also noticed that running glxgears will result in a black window where the spinning gears should be visible. Going out of full screen (with right ctrl-f) fixes that problem.

Host: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, nVidia GTX 285 with latest drivers at 1920x1200

Guest: Ubuntu 12.04/12.10 (also noticed with other recent linux distributions, issue not present with Windows XP)

Observed same issue with VB 4.2.12 r84980. Host is Windows 7 64-bit, Nvidia graphics card and drivers. Guest is Linux Mint 15 or Ubuntu 13.04 plus guest addons. With 3d enabled, the mini toolbar is missing, as described by original post. This makes it extremely painful to use in full screen mode.

-thanks for investigating

Still present in VirtualBox 4.3.0.

Host: Windows 7 64-bit, nVidia graphics card. Two monitors: main: 1280x1024, secondary: 1440x900. Hardware assisted virtualization enabled.

Guest: Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit Preview. Running full-screen in single monitor mode on main monitor at 1280x1024. Guest Additions 4.3.0 installed. 2D/3D video acceleration enabled.

This bug only occurs when the guest is running full-screen on the main monitor at 1280x1024. When running full-screen on the secondary monitor at 1440x900, the bug does not happen.

Also, the bug does not occur if 3D video acceleration is turned off in the VM settings (leaving only 2D acceleration on).

I have the same problem as the last poster. Only differences are that my monitors are 1920x1200 (main) and 1280x1024 and that the guests with problems in full screen are also linux distros.

I have this problem with virtualbox guests running a Gnome 3 environment of some sort (Gnome Shell, Cinnamon, Unity, etc.) and guests running Aero (Windows 7). When maximized, everything is fine. However, once running in fullscreen, the 3D accelerated graphics are glitchy and slow and the Virtualbox menus (close, maximize, minimize, install guest additions, etc.) are invisible. When I hover my cursor above where the menus would appear, my cursor turns into the one used by my host machine as expected. I can see the menus when: I'm at the login screen for the guest or when I scroll with my touchpad. It appear after scrolling, but disappears once I click into the guest's desktop environment.

I am running an HP Envy 3040nr (2012) model Integrated graphics: Intel HD 3000 Dedicated graphics: AMD Radeon HD 7690M

I am running Windows 8.1 x64 Virtualbox 4.3.6

comment:31 by DavidPinheiro, 11 years ago

Same happens on:

Host: Windows 8

Guest: Windows 8 OR Ubuntu 12.04

when "Enable 3D Acceleration" is activated.

Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT

Still present in VirtualBox 4.3.12. Running LinuxMint 17 Cinnamon guest (based on Ubuntu 14.04) running on 64 bit Windows 7 Pro Host (4.3.12 guest additions installed and working).

Both 32 and 64 bit guests linux desktops hide the mini-toolbar when 3D acceleration is enabled, but work fine when 3D is disabled.

comment:35 by mxdpeep, 10 years ago

yes, the mini-toolbar and the RCTRL menu is missing in my Windows XP guest (Ubuntu 14.04 host) on AMD machine, is visible on nVidia machine though

in reply to:  description comment:36 by GaetaWoo, 10 years ago

I'm running VBox 4.3.12 r93733 on a win7 x64 host and linux 17 x64 cinnamon guest. When I goto full screen, the fullscreen goes to my main monitor which I don't want, so I try to open the mini-toolbar but it doesn't show up. If I log out of the guest into the login screen, then the mini-toolbar appears and I can change the fullscreen to show on my second monitor. When it was on my second monitor, and I re-logged into my guest, the mini-toolbar is now visible within cinnamon... so I don't know what that means, except that this is still a bug, but a poor workaround is to logout within the guest so the toolbar renders, make your moves, then log back in.

comment:37 by gsgleason, 10 years ago

After upgrading to 4.3.16 from 4.3.14, the mini toolbar is no longer on top of the virtual machine in full screen mode.

It makes no difference if I enable or disable 3D acceleration.

I'm using arch linux x86_64.

Host key + Home does show the menu, but I prefer to have it available by mousing to the bottom center.

If I press the Host key and then alt+tab (which is caught by my host OS window manager, I can see a qt application for the mini tool bar, and if I select it, I see it over the VM, but as soon as I click in the VM, it is hidden again.

Downgrading to 3.14 fixes it.
