Mac OS X 10.6 Server still waiting for root device issue

Description
Topic says it.....can't install due to "still waiting for root device". I've taken a Mac OS X 10.6 Server DVD, created a cdr image of it in OS X (due to the fact that the DVD is dual layer, and the Windows machine here has only a single layer DVD), and attached it to IDE Primary. Boots through the EFI jazz, starts to go through Darwin (I think) then sits at "Still waiting for root device" and that's where it ends.

In my experience (a few months since I tackled this): the issue might be worked around by first partitioning the virtual disk, by formatting the partition to which you will install.
If the Snow Leopard Server DVD will not start the virtual machine, for partitioning purposes, then try an alternative partitioning tool. Maybe Parted Magic, or the version of Parted Magic that's on UBCD.
If you do begin with a non-Apple utility for partitioning and/or formatting, then I recommend using Apple Disk Utility before proceeding with installation of the OS.

Same in VirtualBox 4.1.22 r80657 in Ubuntu Linux 10.10. Mac OS X 10.5.6 installation dvd (image). I try Mac OS x 10.6.3: samr result: infinite "still waiting for root device". Hard drive image is not formated, just created by VirtualBox. Btw in VirtualBox 4.1.22 Mac OS type guest can start without error only in 64 mode.
