DigiView USB Logic Analyzer DV3400 not working with VirtualBox

Description (last modified by Frank Mehnert)

I bought a TechTools DigiView DV3400 USB logic analyzer. When following the installation procedure, I installed the DigiView software version 6.0.4, and told VirtualBox to take ownership over the USB device (088a:1001). The Windows sees the device and installs the driver.

When I actually try to run the program, it successfully detects the device, but when it tries to communicate with it, the program hangs in the kernel until I turn off the device.

I contacted TechTools support, and after a long debugging session they suggested that I try VMWare Player. I made an identical clean installation of Windows XP 64 bit on VirtualBox and VMWare Player. After identical installation steps, I reached two identical systems. On VirtualBox, the device would not work. On VMWare Player it works without an hitch.

The host system is Debian Lenny 64bit with kernel 2.6.32 from backports. I have mounted USBFS with full permissions for my user.

The TechTools support suggested two possible causes for the hang. One is a device use conflict, and the other is insufficient support for USB 2.0.

The device is working through the Cypress USB drivers.

The program can be downloaded, free of charge, from http://www.tech-tools.com/dv_softmain.htm
