Solaris 10 10/09 Installer hangs on VirtualBox 3.1.4

Reported by: roxyland Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 3.1.4
Keywords: Solaris 10 09 installer hang Cc:
Guest type: Solaris Host type: Solaris

Description

Running 3.1.4 on OpenSolaris snv_130 ( Same result on Mac OS X )

Using an ISO DVD image ( which works fine on baremetal ) to boot into the guest installer ( Solaris 10 -10/09 ). It just hangs after the Solaris installer screen fills a line with dots. I have tried downloading a fresh DVD image. I have also tried the same on a Mac OSX host ( 3.1.4 ) with the same result to rule out any possible issues with the OpenSolaris host itself.

Is this the only VM you're running? Could you try disabling PAE?

Found the problem. Solaris panics if IO APIC is disabled. Have been able to boot off DVD with it enabled.

So you turned off the IO-APIC after creating the VM? Chosing the 64 bits Solaris guest type during VM creation automatically turns on the IO-APIC.

Yes I turned it off after vm creation mainly to see if it improved performance.

Bad idea. :) 64 bits guests need an IO-APIC.
