Host file system FAT32?

comment:3 by Notes, 14 years ago

Yes, FAT32, But before I had Win XP vdi installed and it extended beyond 5 GB as I installed more SWs in XP.

Unfortunately, FAT32 does not allow files bigger than 4GB. And even worse: It is quite difficult to implement a generic check for the maximal file size of a Windows file system. You will definitely not be able to have a .vdi image which is bigger than 4G on a FAT32 partition.

Resolution: wontfix
Status: newclosed

We do not support splitting up VDI files into 4 GB chunks. You should use VMDK if you are unwilling/unable to switch to NTFS. (VBoxManage allows you to create a split VMDK, which then can be used for the VM)

The only workaround for existing VMs is to move the VDI to an NTFS partition.

I will open an internal defect to present an appropriate warning when trying to create a VDI on a FAT32 partition.
