Description (last modified by )
I've been trying to get a USB mass storage device mapped to an OpenBSD guest, and I've not been having any success mapping the device to OpenBSD, Ubuntu, or OpenSolaris. If I select the device from the USB pop-up, I immediately get the message "Failed to attach the USB device 0000:0000 to the virtual machine". After this, no USB devices show up as available for attachment to the VM, and the mouse integration pop-ups are displayed whenever I recapture the display, refusing to acknowledge that I've checked the box for "Do not show this message again", which I had in any checked previously.
I'm attaching the Ubuntu VM logs, as this is a fully supported OS.

Quick addendum: the usual workaround for this problem is to share the top-level directory for the device. That doesn't work for me, as I'm trying to create a bootable image, which requires that I be able to access it in both raw and block mode.

I've upgraded to VBox 3.1 Beta, and although I'm still having some issues (not necessarily on the virtualisation side), this problem no longer exists. Please close as fixed.

Sorry, but I'm already having to take that back. Once I drop the device reservation from the host OS and try to map it to the guest, I get the same bug, including the mouse capture messages. :-(

Just some further notes on the problems I continue to see under VirtualBox 3.1 Beta 1: the problem triggered by the failed USB capture seems to cause more considerable problems (e.g. the management GUI loses its ability to track the state of running VMs and until exhibits the odd quirk of blanking pop-up options such as specifying the OS for subsequently created VMs).

Please reopen if still relevant with a recent VirtualBox release.
