#5040 closed defect (worksforme)

Windows Server 2003 VM and VirtualBox UI were frozen until I restarted my host OS -> retry with 3.0.10

Reported by: Viktor Ferenczi Owned by:

Description

Host

Host OS: Ubuntu 9.04 amd64

Host CPU: Intel Q6600

Host memory: 8G

Video driver: nVidia proprietary v180, installed by Ubuntu's non-free driver manager

VirtualBox 3.0.6 from the apt source (upgraded from 3.0.4 a few days ago)

The host works fine.

Guest

Windows Server 2003, see the attached VM configuration file.

Latest Guest Additions (3.0.6) were installed, then the guest was rebooted correctly.

Symptom

My Windows 2003 guest system suddenly became frozen. I haven't done anything special, there were no excessive CPU load or I/O. I just used SkyPE chat in the guest, then moved my mouse and the whole VM became frozen.

I tried to suspend/resume the VM as a workaround using the menu of the VM's window, but the menu did not drop down. The whole window was frozen.

I tried to open VirtualBox's Manager window, but it did not open.

I tried to execute VirtualBox from the shell, but it became forzen without printing anything.

The ps -Af|grep VirtualBox command resulted in the following list:

fviktor@sirius:~$ ps -Af|grep VirtualBox
fviktor 7479 7466 22 Sep19 ? 01:00:14 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox --comment windows-2003 --startvm 75bb967e-cf4d-4b0a-ae66-e4a53ab21f82
fviktor 12173 1 0 03:16 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox
fviktor 12520 1 0 03:21 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox
fviktor 12600 1 0 03:25 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox
fviktor 12617 1 0 03:25 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox
fviktor 12695 12635 0 03:26 pts/4 00:00:00 grep VirtualBox

So there were a number of stuck up processes.

After issuing a killall -9 VirtualBox command, one of them became defunct:

fviktor 7479 7466 22 Sep19 ? 01:00:14 [VirtualBox] <defunct>

Starting VirtualBox was impossible until I rebooted my entire host system.

See the attached VM log.

Is this hang reproducible? Does it happen when you reduce the number of guest CPUs to 1? Does disabling the 3D setting help?
