Crash when trying to play Braid game — at Version 8

Description (last modified by Frank Mehnert)

I use VirtualBox PUEL 3.0.0 on Linux guest (Ubuntu 8.04). In Windows XP guest, I have the guest additions installed in safe mode, as instructed by the manual, with Direct3D enabled during instal.

Before VirtualBox versions 3.0.0, whenever I tried to play the game Braid, a black screen would appear, and then close, as if the game was unable to initialize. I was dropped back to the desktop of the guest. However, from 3.0.0 onwards, the complete guest machine crashes. The VirtualBox gui shows the virtual machine as "Aborted". I am attaching my VBox.log for the machine. The log, however, does not show any indication of the crash.

On Windows 7 host, the behaviour is similar to previous versions - the game itself fails to initialize, dropping me back to the guest desktop. The guest machine itself does not crash.

The same happens on VBox 3.0.2 PUEL with Kubuntu 8.04.

I noticed a message I got in dmesg:

[ 392.895949] VirtualBox[6892]: segfault at 00000004 eip b5361135 esp b540cc90 error 4

I don't know what to make of it, or how do I debug further.

This message means that the VirtualBox process crashed at some point. If this still happens when you use the latest release (VBox 3.0.6) then you could contact me at frank _dot_ mehnert _at_ sun _dot_ com to provide me a core dump.

Fortunately, VBox doesn't crash any more with 3.0.6 release. However, I still can't play the game - it hangs at a black screen.
