Cursor moves bottom-right when mouse integration active, Linux host + XP Guest

Description (last modified by aeichner)

Cursor moves bottom-right when mouse integration active, Linux host + XP + SP2 Guest. Worked fine under 1.3.8 with Guest Additions but not with 1.4.0, already upgraded Guest Additions, tried removing and reinstalling with no luck. Also tried SDL_VIDEO_X11_DGAMOUSE=0 under /etc/environment, comfirmed that variable is set, didn't help.

Using Kubuntu 7.04 + Beryl + Nvidia, but also happens with a failsafe session.

Haven't tried a new OS install, I'm using a non-VM installation converted with VMWare Converter to VMDK, then IMG, then VDI, removed VMWare Tools and installed Guest Additions, and worked really fine under 1.3.8.

If I deactivate mouse integration it works fine.

Tried it with the nv driver, same result. Will try a new OS install and provide feedback later.

Tried repair installation with a slipstreamed XP+SP2 CD (rebuilds driver database) didn't work either.

Problem solved. I took the original vmdk from VMWare Converter, uninstalled VMWare Tools, and booted it with VBox.

My laptop is a Centrino, had to follow this workaround for p3.sys and intelppm.sys to avoid BSOD (it happened already with 1.3.8)

Now everything works fine again. Thanks for doing such a fine product :)

Happened again in 1.5.0, the first time I got around it with a new install over another image (the original VMDK from which I made the VDI, see above). Right now I still keep that image, but with a raw partition VMDK I got the problem again. A colleague of mine has the same work laptop (Tecra M2), helped him use his Windows partition in Vbox 1.5.0 and he didn't had the same problem. it MAY be related to installing Guest Additions prior to let Windows finish detect all the new hardware (I may have been impatient :/) but I'm not completely sure.

Tested with a Linux guest. Host Kubuntu 7.04, guest PCLinuxOS 2007. Installed guest additions and the same thing happened.

The funny thing is that when I drag the mouse inside the window the cursor changes to the one used by PCLinuxOS AND is displayed on the right position !!! :o But every click happens at bottom-right just as with the Windows guest. But with a Linux guest I can't disable the mouse integration in the switch, and can't uninstall just the mouse guest addition...

I am having this same problem. Fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit. Guest is Windows XP raw partition. When mouse capture mode is enabled if the guest pointer is out in the middle somewhere, as soon as the mouse is captured it starts moving at a 45 degree angle towards the bottom right of the guest's desktop. If it hits the bottom or the side first then it just keeps sinking or sliding until the bottom right corner is reached. It only moves as long as I am moving the mouse. Once it is at the bottom if I right click I get the standard context menu that I would normally get if I right-clicked the task bar. Disabling the mouse capture allows the mouse to be used, but if mouse capture isn't used then it makes seamless integration unusable along with having to hit the host key every time I want to use the mouse in the host. I have the guest additions added. Haven't tried reinstalling them. Turned off Compiz with no change.

This sounds like two mouse drivers are handling the guest mouse at the same time. Does the device manage of the guest show two mice?

comment:9 by Sean Manning, 16 years ago

No, the device manager only shows 1 mouse - "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse". There is another bug report that covers this exact problem http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/1324. I tried to find the SMS Virtual Mouse like that ticket talked about but I wasn't able to find it in my Device Manager. They didn't really specify exactly where to look though so I might have been looking in the wrong spot. One thing to note was that during the creation of my virtual machine I got a few "new hardware found" balloons that popped up that ultimately failed due to not finding a suitable driver. Later in the device manager under System Devices there was something like "Unknown Device" that had the yellow exclamation point on them that I right clicked and uninstalled to see if that would fix it but no luck.

Just installed version 1.6.2 and the problem has gone away. Didn't see anything specific in the changelog that pertained to fixing this so I don't know if it was a true bug or an installation issue on my part. When I had originally created the VM and started the guest for the first time I got a few "new hardware" bubbles in the system tray while XP was starting up and settling into its new hardware configuration. I recall some of those ultimately failing and wondering of those had been the cause of my problem. I had reinstalled the guest addtions trying to clear up the mouse problem but I don't think that I ever removed them first before trying to reinstall them. When I upgraded VB to version 1.6.2 I left the 1.6.0 version of the guest addtions in place. I had expected a complaint from them saying that they were for a previous version after my first boot of the VM under VB 1.6.2 but I didn't get a complaint. I uninstalled them and then installed the 1.6.2 guest addtions and got the new hardware bubbles while the guest addtions were installing. This time though they did not error out and any windows that popped up asking to search for hardware drivers went away by the time the guest additions completed installing. When I booted the guest the next time the mouse capture was working correctly. So I can't put my finger on exactly what fixed it but I wanted to document my experience now that it is working correctly.

You don't need to uninstall the old guest additions, just install the new one as the upgrade function should work fine.

bruno, any feedback from you with 1.6.2?

comment:12 by Jamie Beverly, 16 years ago

For my part, I had a double-whammy of having the SMS mouse driver; and still having this issue after having removed the SMS driver. In 1.6.2, The mouse still behaves as described if the SMS driver is installed, but works correctly once it's removed.
