Currently it is not possible to install Debian 5.01 ia64 Guest on a Ubuntu 9.04 ia64 Host.
My VirtualBox release: virtualbox-2.2 2.2.2-46594_Ubuntu_jaunty
Installation media does not boot on VirtualBox http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.1/ia64/iso-cd/debian-501-ia64-businesscard.iso
Changing the parameters of the virtual machine does not help...

Indeed. IA64 is Itanium; in other words not supported.
I miss your VBox.log file.
