#3948 closed defect (wontfix)

No 64-bit guests with T5550 => No VT-x

Component: installer Version: VirtualBox 2.2.2

Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description

Cannot install a Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit guest. VT-x is checked but it's also grayed out so I can't uncheck it. In the list of the machine it says VT-x is enabled I put about a gig of ram for the guest and 62 preconfigured gigs for the drive 128 meg for the video card and 3d enabled. I try to install ubuntu 64 via an iso it gets to the screen to select the language and then I go to select install option and it comes back saying I don't have a 64 bit cpu just a 686 cpu is found.

My system is a gateway P-6860fx with a pentium dual core T5550 and 4 gigs of ram with a 250 gig sata drive. I have the latest bios for it. Vista 64 bit works just fine. I bought this one because you can easily upgrade the CPU and add a second harddrive which is unusual for a laptop. It also has the fastest 8800 nvidia card.

Without a VBox.log of such a session there is nothing we can do. My guess is that your BIOS is broken or somebody else is using VT-x on your system.

Summary: Vista 64bit P-6860fx with a intel duo 64 bit T5550 cpu in vbox VTx is greyed but it says it is enabled in the list I try to install Ubuntu 64 says my cpu is not 64bit and only finds a 686 cpuNo 64-bit guests with T5550 => No VT-x

This website does not mention any VT-x support of your CPU, only Dual Core and EM64T are mentioned. Seems you have the rare case of a CPU supporting 64-bit but not having VT-x available. Sorry, even on a 64-bit host VirtualBox will not be able to execute 64-bit guests on your CPU.

Ok I have subsequently install ubuntu x86 successfully is there anyway for me to retrieve any useful log after having done this? Can I just start up a new machine and then go about installing? I am the only user on my laptop and it seems to be a clean system regarding viruses etc. VTx appears to be enabled as it says so in virtualbox's list but I cannot uncheck VTX nor can I add the paging option just below it. Please tell me if i create a new machine for purposes of generating a log how can I find it's log file for submission to you.

Thanks.

here is a list of intel cpus of the core 2 duo processor (two cores) you will notice that T5550 does not have "intel Virtualization Technology(Intel VT) but it has all other checks dual core speedstep 64bit etc. This list might be helpful. I can upgrade the cpu on this notebook easily to one with the Virtualization. I believe depending on the design of the notebook others may be able to upgrade also. Strangely when I researched this Intel printed materials stated that it supported virtualization. SO the fault is with the particular cpu if you go up even just to a T5560 VT is a feature.

correction the T5600 and above.

I know this is a bug report but people do use them to figure solutions. I just wanted to add a final note. as for my computer the gateway p-6860fx it seems the best overall cost/benefit upgrade is not the Txxx but upgrade the CPU to the X7800 .. this cpu the P6860fx bios can run at full tilt and it's faster and better overall than the T8300 the only possible thing is I don't think it has SSE4 instructions but it has all the other bells and whistles including full support for very fast visualization. Make sure you fetch a new tube of artic silver before you go for it. This would probably neutralize the warranty.

I would suggest you to go to the forums to debate such things.
