#3640 new enhancement

Additional Preference to swap Control (CTRL) and Command (CMD) keys per virtual machine

Reported by: Elliot Owned by:
Component: GUI Version: VirtualBox 2.1.4

Guest type: other Host type: Mac OS X

Description

Both Parallels and VMWare Fusion have a really useful preference that allows a user to optionally swap the key mappings for CMD and CTRL within a virtual machine. It would be fantastic if someone could implement this in VirtualBox as it is extremely useful on Mac OS X. It means you can continue using the same keyboard shortcuts regardless of whether you are in the host or guest operating system, and regardless of guest OS.

I know is a minor enhancement, but it is very annoying. Thanks anyway

No way to add this feature?

Find someone who contributes the change is probably the fastest solution. Expecting us to implement such a unusual feature for just a couple of users is a bit bold.

I'ts so bold that both fusion and parallels decide to implement it since their first release. Thanks for your support

+1 I'm amazed that this still isn't implemented, it should be a simple preference and an if statement in the keyboard processor.

Unfortunately even small features cost engineering time (implementing, debugging, documenting, etc), and while I understand that this particular feature is probably important for you we have to take decisions as to what to implement and what not - there are potentially thousands of equally valuable small features we could be implementing which would improve life for some group of users, as well as enough major features to keep us busy. Unlike the two competing products mentioned in the defect though, VirtualBox is open sourced, and we do accept patches, so if you can find enough other people interested in this chances are one of them will have the skills needed to produce the patch. Sorry that I can't give you a more satisfactory answer.

A good solution is to use AutoHotKey. It seems to be a very powerful program. See

http://superuser.com/questions/102249/how-to-switch-some-basic-keys-in-windows-windows-virtualbox-guest-on-osx-host

By adding some commands to the sample script on the superuser.com page, it is possible to make almost everything work like OS X. It seems to be a very powerful program.
