Unable to type some standard characters from 105-key US english keyboard

Description
Windows XP host running a Debian 4.0r3 guest. Using a 105-key US english keyboard on my Windows XP laptop. The Debian guest appear stuck on UK keyboard layout. The get pipe symbol ( | ) will not work and maps to tilde. For shift-3, I get pound ( £ ) characters. Host is running in normal US English, and the Windows XP Host Control Panel reports "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard".
