VirtualBox hangs after saving state of a virtual machine

Description (last modified by frank) (diff)

The problem described below showed up with OpenSuSE 11 (32 and 64 bit) as guest systems, Windows XP SP3 (32 bit) as host.

After I try to save the state of a virtual machine, the progress bar goes up to 100% as usual then disappears. The virtual machine's window ("... - Sun xVM VirtualBox") still remains visible, although "grayed", as when saving was in progress.

I can try to close this window or select menu items (for example, Machine->Close) but nothing happens in each case. The mouse cursor has a "wait" form.

It may have something to do with shared clipboard support, it seems. The problem happened after I copied some text in the guest OS and pasted it several times on the guest OS again. In addition, if I disable shared clipboard supports in the settings of the virtual machine, the problem does not show up.

While the VirtualBox's window hangs, clipboard is not working on the host OS as well: copying has no effect although no error message is displayed.

After I kill VirtualBox's processes, the clipboard starts working again on the host system. The state of the guest OS seems to be saved: looks like it can be restored successfully then.

I have attached the log of a session that ended up with that problem.

According to the information provided by Process Explorer, when the problem occurs, one of the threads of the process VirtualBox.exe hangs with state "Wait:Executive"

Unfortunately, I am unable to copy & paste the stack for this thread for obvious reasons.

I'm having the same problem on openSuse 11.1 x86. Virtualbox will sometimes hang at 97% when saving the machine state.

I'm having the same problem on Debian x86 and Vista x64.Virtualbox will sometimes hang at 98% when saving the machine state.

I have used a kd debugger to obtain more information about that suspicious hanging thread in VirtualBox.exe. The log of the kd session is attached (some parts are skipped, they are probably not relevant in this case).

Thread and IRP data may prove useful.

By the way, this issue probably shows up when I copy & paste something containing newlines from guest to host and vice versa. Maybe it is a mere coincidence, but still.

same problem here: Ubuntu 64bit Virtual Machine does not close and remains 'grayed' out but using to much CPU

The problem still exists in VirtualBox 2.1.4 (I have checked it with OpenSuSE 11 32bit as a guest OS) but it took more time to reproduce it.

The first time the machine state was saved OK, the problem showed up when I tried to do it the second time.

This is the same issue with build 2.1.4 on Oracle Enterprise Linx 64 bit. Guest and host servers hang and only option is to hard-boot host box. Currently VB is useless on OEL.

Same problem. All hosts hang when shutting down or saving state. Virtualbox 2.2.4 DISTRIB_ID=LinuxMint DISTRIB_RELEASE=7 DISTRIB_CODENAME=Gloria DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Linux Mint 7 Gloria - x64 Edition" KERNEL=2.6.28-11-generic

I've been getting the exact same problem. VirtualBox 4.1.4 r74291, Win32 XP SP 3 host, Ubuntu 11 guest. Trying to copy from the vbox and paste into any native host program hangs the host program. Much later, trying to save-and-close the vbox hung that process too, with the behavior described above.

I've attached the complete vbox log file. The last several lines of the file are errors generated during the hang. I finally had to kill off the processes in the host's task manager; about to try restoring the saved state now...
