Description
I installed Ubuntu 24.04 (downloaded just now, this is not a beta - ./ubuntu-24.04-desktop-amd64.iso - 6_114_656_256 bytes size) in my Virtualbox 7.0.18.
Installation process went fine, GUI was OK. But after installation, as soon as Ubuntu loads, I see only black screen.
My host PC is this: 2x Xeon 2696v4, 256GB RAM, Huananzhi x99 f8d plus motherboard, Ubuntu 22.04 host operating system with all updates.
Please, advise. I can provide any logs, if necessary.

I've put 64MB of video RAM, and now it works fine. Close the issue please.
But you know, it would be good if you set this value by default for this OS kind.

Hello, I'm also affected but configuring 64MB or video RAM didn't help for me so please don't close because this is still relevant to me. Actually I tend maximize it to 128MB, and the effect is the same (black screen). All of this started to happen after I upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 22.04 with was fine. Clues in ticket https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/21955 pointed to disable Wayland and in fact resorting to XOrg workaround the issue, but that ticket is not a duplicate of this one.

One hopefully useful detail: my resolution is 1920 x 1013, which is what you get in a 1920x1080 display with Windows host by setting the Windows taskbar to small and removing menu/status bars in the VirtualBox VM window.

Example of corruption after Alt+F2 - Alt+F1 cycle

Adding a few more details: VirtualBox 7.1.4, with guest additions and extension pack updated. Ubuntu 24.04.1 with all updates installed. After the black screen I can still Alt+F2 to access a console, and then I can access the GDM with Alt+F1 and it may briefly show me some good graphics, but upon any input from mouse it's just corruption, like the attached excerpt corruption.png

Hi Francesco,
Thank you the log. I cannot immediately spot anything there. Can you see GDM screen on initial boot? What happens if you attempt to resize guest screen by dragging bottom-right window corner or selecting resolution from the list? It might helpful to have a look at guest-side system logs in order to get better understanding.

Hello, I captured a recording of my current experience with Ubuntu 24.04 and Wayland Enabled:

Rarely I can see an uncorrupted GDM screen, but just briefly: it gets corrupted as soon as any input (mouse or keyboard) is received.
It might helpful to have a look at guest-side system logs in order to get better understanding.
Sure, please instruct me which logs you want and how I should collect them.

I think after recent VB updates it's now clear that this ticket is really a duplicate of https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/21955 and can be closed as such.

Hi Ihor_Bobak,
Please attach VBox.log. Also, please make sure that VM has enough video memory. Try to maximize it and see if it changes anything.
