Windows 10 Guest VM Doesn't Boot After KB5029331 / 2023-08 Cumulative Update (Tue 8/22)

Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

I have installed KB5029331 on both host Windows 10 and the Windows 10 guest OS. I have two VMs running Windows 10 and both have the same problem.

After installing KB5029331, when attempting to boot after installation, the VM hangs and doesn't start entering Windows. I can close the VM (like force shutdown). Upon re-starting the VM after the failed boot, it will enter recovery mode and Windows will remove KB5029331.

This originally happened when running 7.0.6, but I have upgraded to 7.0.10 and the issue has persisted.

Same here. Windows 10 or 11 host, Windows 10 guest: doesn't boot anymore after KB5029331 / 2023-08 Cumulative Update. Windows 10 or 11 host, Windows 11 22H2 guest: doesn't boot anymore after KB5029351 / 2023-08 Cumulative Update (see also bug #21837). NO PROBLEMS before updating to KB5029331 or KB5029351. But: This seams to be HW-dependend. I have 2 machines, one with i9-10900K CPU, one with i7-9700T CPU. Both machines have all current Windows updates. But only the machine with i9-10900K shows the problems after updating the guests to KB5029331 or KB5029351, and this machine shows is under Windows 10 and Windows 11 host OS and with Windows 10 and Windows 11 guests. The i7-9700T machine doesn't show this problem at all.

I was able to install the September update, KB5030211, without any issues. So this isn't an issue as long as August 2023 update is skipped.
