#21623 new defect

Error install Version 7 without networking support

Reported by: MaTe Owned by:
Component: network Version: VirtualBox-7.0.8
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

Hello.

During setup of Version 7 only the application and no other option was selected. If I then start the program, I can add a network adapter with NAT and the VM has access to the host network !?!?

It doesn't matter if install via Setup.exe or via command line (msiexec /i VirtualBox-<version>-Win.msi ADDLOCAL=VBoxApplication /q)

In Version 6 this all works fine , no networkoption selectet - no network option available!

It's the other way around:

What you describe for VirtualBox 7.0 is the expected behavior. The VirtualBox Bridged Networking driver is only used for the Brigded networking mode. The VirtualBox Host-Only Networking driver is only used for the Host-Only networking mode. The other networking modes, especially NAT, should work without those two drivers being installed.

Hello fth0

".....The other network modes, especially NAT, should work without these two drivers installed......" that's exactly what I don't want!

We have a training scenario where students should practice OS installation and configuration - WITHOUT any network access! Is there any way to also prevent or lock the NAT when installing VirtualBox!!!?

Version 6 also did not allow NAT when I did NOT install the network components.

Replying to MaTe:

I just installed VirtualBox 6.1.44 and 7.0.8, both without the network components, and I could use NAT in both installations, just as I assumed beforehand. So you're either using another VirtualBox version, or you've prevented VirtualBox from accessing the network via a Firewall, or something else ...

You could try and use the Windows Firewall to achieve that. VirtualBox is a "simple" host application using the Windows network infrastructure, just like the Edge browser.
